Painting in Newlands

Newlands is the wettest suburb in South Africa. The eastern slopes of Table Mountain wring the water out of every winter front that comes through, and parts of the suburb take well over a thousand millimetres a year - roughly double what falls on the flats a few kilometres east. Almost every painting decision here follows from that single fact.

Walls under the oak canopy on the upper roads can stay damp for weeks at a stretch between June and August. Paint applied to a wall that has not properly dried never cures, and the film lifts in sheets the following winter. • Book exterior work between November and March. Winter here is not a slow season for painting, it is a closed one
• Cut back overhanging branches before we start. Anything that keeps a wall permanently wet will shorten the life of whatever goes on it
